Drew Graduate Receives Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award

Charles Drew Laboratory alumnus Jason McGhee, a first-year art teacher at Lansing schools' Beekman Center, was named Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year by the Okemos store earlier this month.

McGhee was nominated by four of the school's students, who work at the store. He received the award - plus $100 for himself and $1,000 for the school - during a surprise ceremony at the center. He now enters the state-level step of Wal-Mart's annual national competition.

Beekman serves students ages 2 to 26 who have special physical and cognitive needs.
