BiologyThe biology component consists of an enrichment course, NSC 203, “Problem Solving in Biology.“ This course is available to all students in the program who are concurrently enrolled in BS 110 or BS 111. NSC is a one-credit course that meets two hours a week and includes additional study sessions. Tutoring is available and the emphasis is on enrichment activities. The goal of the biology program is to increase participation of underrepresented students in the biological sciences by enriching the core biology series (BS110 and BS111), which historically have been "gateway" courses to successful completion of a degree in the life sciences, and to promote participation of students in research opportunities and other career-enhancing activities. NSC 203 follows the Drew program’s emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving techniques and focuses on the development of the skills to synthesize, integrate, interpret, and apply scientific information as it applies to the biological sciences. A Drew section of the concurrent laboratory is offered to better integrate lab and lecture material. Concurrent enrollment in NSC203 is required for all students in the Drew lab section.
