Michigan State University

Parents

The Drew program believes that college should be a family experience. As your student begins their college career, you should take pride in the fact that their academic achievements have made this invitation and transition possible. Your support and guidance throughout childhood and early adolescence has also contributed to their success and positioned them for this next important phase of their life.

The Drew program recognizes that families play an important role in assisting students in the selection of a university and in supporting them in their university experience. We know the university experience marks major transition for both our students and their families.

The following are some suggestions for the parents of Drew students:

  • Encourage them to explore decision-making, values, and priorities.
  • Express an opinion about what you expect from them in college (attend classes, study sessions, financial responsibility, study time vs. social time, staying in touch).
  • Do your homework. Read the literature and visit the university’s Web sites.
  • Encourage your student to stay on campus for the weekend. This will help to cure homesickness. This is valuable study time for serious students studying math, chemistry, or biology. Many study sessions are held on the weekend.
  • Encourage your student to use the colleges’ resources.
  • Remain positive, even if you have doubts about their initial choices.
  • Visit your student at least once a semester.
  • Feel free to contact the director with any concerns you may have.
